C tyres and the dual load index
A C after the size (for example 215/65 R16C) marks a tyre for commercial vehicles. Its carcass is stronger than a car tyre's, and its load capacity relies on a clearly higher inflation pressure. It carries two load indices, for example 106/104: the higher one applies to an axle with one wheel on each side, the lower one to twin wheels. Choose at least the load capacity given in the registration details – under the Road Traffic Act, the van must be loadable to its permitted road mass without exceeding the tyres' load capacity. Pressure to match the load
A van's load varies from empty to full, and a C tyre only delivers its load capacity at the correct pressure. The vehicle's tyre pressure table usually gives separate values for an empty and a fully loaded van. Measure the pressure with the tyres cold and adjust it before carrying a heavy load: underinflated, the tyre flexes too much, heats up and can be damaged.
Vans in winter
In Finland, vans must use winter tyres from November to March if weather or road conditions require it, with main grooves at least 3.0 mm deep. A non-studded winter tyre must carry the 3PMSF marking. Studded tyres must be fitted on all wheels, except the second wheel of a twin pair. Read more about studded tyres.
