225/45 R17 sports car tyres
Sports car tyres must deliver grip and stability at high speed, so the speed rating, load capacity and any car maker's approval mark are what count. This page opens with the size 225/45 R17 – switch to your own size in the Tyre size filter. Read the guide

Speed rating and the ZR marking
The speed rating is the highest speed at which the tyre may carry the load given by its load index: V means 240 km/h, W 270 km/h and Y 300 km/h. ZR in the middle of the size (for example 225/45 ZR17 94Y) shows that the tyre is designed for speeds above 240 km/h; the exact limit is given by the speed rating after the size, and a marking in brackets, such as (94Y), means above 300 km/h. Choose at least the load index and speed rating the car manufacturer requires. More in our guide to construction codes.
Car maker approval marks
Many original tyres for sporty cars are developed together with the car maker and tuned to that car's weight and chassis. You can recognise them by a code on the sidewall, for example MO (Mercedes-Benz), ★ (BMW), AO (Audi) or N0, N1 and so on (Porsche; the number shows the approved version). If your car has such tyres now, it is best to choose the same marking for the new ones – and the same model on both axles. If there are approved tyres in the selected size, you can narrow the list down with the Homologation filter.
Rim protection and cold weather
Low-profile tyres often have rim protection: a rubber rib moulded into the sidewall (for example marked FR) that takes a kerb scrape before the rim edge does. You can select it in the Rim Protection filter. The compound of a sporty summer tyre is made for warm weather, and grip drops even before temperatures go below zero. Tyre makers warn that frost can make the compound so brittle that it cracks as the tyre flexes – so change in good time, store the tyres indoors and let cold tyres warm up before fitting.
Why this page opens with 225/45 R17
225/45 R17 is a common size on sporty compact cars. Switch to your own size in the Tyre size filter. Some rear-wheel-drive sports cars have wider tyres at the rear than at the front – then you need two sizes.
