120/70 R17 motorcycle tyres
A motorcycle's front and rear tyres usually differ in size and do different jobs, so they are chosen according to the sizes the manufacturer specifies. This page opens with the common front size 120/70 R17 – change the size in the Tyre size filter. Read the guide

Front and rear tyres
120/70 R17 is the front tyre on many road and sport-touring motorcycles, while the rear is much wider, for example 180/55 R17 or 190/50 R17. The correct sizes, construction and speed rating are listed in your motorcycle's owner's manual. Most tyres are made either for the front or for the rear wheel, and the arrow on the sidewall shows the direction of rotation in which the tyre must be fitted. It is best to choose the same tyre model front and rear, as the pair is developed to work together. Choose your own front or rear size in the Tyre size filter.
Construction and inner tubes
An R in the size means a radial tyre, a B a bias-belted one. Do not mix radial and bias tyres on the same motorcycle; use the construction given in the owner's manual, because the two behave differently in corners. TL (tubeless) means a tyre without an inner tube, TT (tube type) one with a tube. A TT rim, such as many spoked wheels, always needs an inner tube, even if the tyre is marked TT/TL. More in our guide to construction codes.
Running in and Finnish rules
A new tyre's surface still carries release agent from the mould, so ride the first 100 km or more gently: accelerate and brake smoothly and build up lean angle gradually. Check the pressure with the tyres cold. Under the Road Traffic Act, the main grooves of motorcycle tyres must be at least 1.0 mm deep. The winter tyre requirement applies to motorcycles too: if you ride between November and March and weather or road conditions require it, the tyres must be coarse-treaded tyres suitable for winter use, with main grooves at least 3.0 mm deep. A tyre that sees little use often ages before it wears out – read more about tyre age.
